Liverpool vs Crystal PalaceJune 24th 2020

Liverpool 4-0 Crystal Palace – Liverpool put in a champion worthy performance at Anfield to sweep aside Crystal Palace meaning that Liverpool could be crowned champions if Manchester City fail to win at Stamford Bridge.

First half:

Liverpool started much faster than they did in the Merseyside derby against Everton in the previous match and had an opportunity to score early on when the ball fell to midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, however; the Dutch midfielder scuffed his shot wide of the post missing a chance to give Liverpool the perfect start.

The opening stages of the game was all one way traffic in favour of the hosts Liverpool and this time it was striker Roberto Firmino who saw his shot comfortably saved by Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey as Firmino missed another opportunity to break his Premier League Anfield goal drought this season.

Liverpool’s early dominance was rewarded in the 23rd minute when right back Trent Alexander-Arnold took a fantastic free kick which found the back of the net nestling past Wayne Hennessey as the Liverpool right back scored his first Anfield goal since December 2017.

Liverpool then very nearly doubled their lead when skipper Jordan Henderson’s shot came back off the post and then the ball rebounded off Virgil Van Dijk but thankfully for Palace Joel Ward was on the line to clear the ball away for the corner. Liverpool at this point were looking in the mood to score many goals at this point.

Just before half time and Liverpool’s lead was doubled by Egyptian winger Mohammed Salah who was picked out excellently by Fabinho to get beyond Palace left back Patrick van Aanholt and finish expertly to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead going in to the break, a score line the first half dominance from the reds deserved.

Second half:

Liverpool rather strolled through early moments of the second half due to little to no threat from visitors Crystal Palace, and Liverpool then went on to add a third goal just 10 minutes in to the second half when Brazilian midfielder Fabinho unleashed a wonderful strike to put Liverpool 3-0 up as the reds were on course to maintain their 100% record at Anfield this season.

A little under 15 minutes later and Liverpool were 4-0 up thanks to Senegalese winger Sadio Mane who was put through by Salah and finished emphatically to give Liverpool a deserved 4-0 lead as the reds looked back their best in a wonderful footballing display against a below par Crystal Palace side on the day.

Liverpool saw out the final 20 minutes in comfortable fashion to make sure of an easy 4-0 and one step closer to ending the wait of 30 years without a Premier League title which has a possibility of being won when Liverpool travel to Manchester City on the 2nd July.

Full time

Man of the match:

Fabinho – The Brazilian holding midfielder put in a classy performance by bossing the midfield all game and capping off a fine display by a brilliant assist for Mohammed Salah and scoring a fantastic goal in an all-round brilliant display.

Fascinating facts:

This was Liverpool’s biggest win against Crystal Palace at Anfield in the Premier League since November 1992.

All of Mohammed Salah’s last 5 Premier League goals have come at Anfield.

All 3 of Fabinho’s Liverpool goals have come in wins at Anfield.

Sadio Mane has scored in each of his last 6 Premier League appearance he has made for Liverpool against Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace have lost only two away games in 2020 which have both been against both Merseyside clubs Liverpool (4-0), and Everton (3-1).

This is only the second time Crystal Palace have conceded 4 in a game this season with the other being a 4-0 defeat at Tottenham back in September.

Crystal Palace remain the last team to win at Anfield which was a 1-2 victory back in April 2017.

Talking points:

Liverpool looking back to their rampant best – Liverpool put in a relatively below par performance at Goodison Park in their return to Premier League action last week, however, a brilliant performance against Crystal Palace ensured the surely champions to be were back in to their best in their quest to win the Premier League.

Mohammed Salah and Andy Robertson’s returns vital – Liverpool went in to the Merseyside derby against Everton last week without left back Andy Robertson and top scorer Mohammed Salah and judging by this week’s performances, the return of these two men to the starting 11 was vitally important for the reds to get back to their best.

Fabinho runs the show – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho has been a key player for the reds this season in his holding midfield role and this performance may well have been his best this season getting a goal and an assist as well as completely dominating the game from start to finish.

Crystal Palace’s good form comes to an end – Of course all good things must come to an end and Eagles have been on a great run of form winning their last 4 games without even conceding a goal, however, today Crystal Palace never even managed to lay a glove on Liverpool and were thoroughly second best all day.

Wilfried Zaha early injury a major blow for Crystal Palace – Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha has caused Liverpool some problems at Anfield in the past and Palace fans would have no doubt been hoping for more of the same in this match up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, however, the Eagles hope was dashed after Zaha was subbed off with injury after just 15 minutes which might well have thrown Roy Hodgson’s game plan out of the window, with Palace losing their main man.

Chelsea vs Manchester City game can now decide if Liverpool are crowned champions – Let’s face it, it’s a case of when not if Liverpool win the Premier League this season, the reds are just one win away from being crowned champions however, Liverpool can actually be confirmed as champions without even kicking a ball, if Manchester City fail to win at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, Liverpool’s 30 year wait for the Premier League title will be over. Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 confirmed Leicester City as champions and now Liverpool will be hoping a similar thing to happen at Stamford Bridge when Manchester City travel to the capital.

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United23rd June 2020

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 West Ham United – Harry Kane got his name back on the scoresheet as Spurs scored two important second half goals to pick up their first Premier League win in 5 matches as West Ham remain only just outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

First half:

The opening to the first half of this London derby never really got going in terms of entertainment with both sides being out of form and looking rather cagey and hesitant to take any chances in the early going at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The first big opportunity of the game fell to the visitors when a Mark Noble free kick found its way through to Michail Antonio who had his shot saved by the legs of Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and then Jarrod Bowen had his follow up shot blocked by Eric Dier as West Ham failed to capitalize on a good opportunity to take the lead.

The first meaningful effort from Tottenham Hotspur in the game was from winger Lucas Moura when the Brazilian unleashed an effort from about 25 yards out which was well tipped over the crossbar by Hammers shot stopper Lukasz Fabianski as the game started to slowly liven up after a slow start.

Tottenham Hotspur thought they found the breakthrough right on half time when Son Heung-min fired past Fabianski at the near post; however, VAR had a look at the goal and decided that Son was stood in an offside position, it was very close but Spurs had the goal ruled out by VAR, a massive blow for Spurs but a huge plus for relegation battling West Ham who managed to go in at half time 0-0.

Second half:

Tottenham Hotspur largely began to dominate the game in the second half with the biggest chance falling to main striker Harry Kane after a swift counter attack in the first big chance of the half, and it was a chance that the English striker uncharacteristically missed putting wide of the post as Spurs must have begun to wonder if it was going to be there day.

64 minutes in and Tottenham Hotspur this time managed to find a breakthrough when Czech Republic international Tomas Soucek put through his own net after he failed to clear a Spurs corner the ball unfortunately struck the Hammers man’s heel and found its way past goalkeeper Fabianski, not the prettiest goal but Tottenham Hotspur did not care at all they lead 1-0.

The biggest chance the Hammers had to equalise fell to winger Jarrod Bowen when his left footed strike hit the post in a huge opportunity to bring West Ham level, the January signing had his head in his hands as he and the Hammers knew they would not get many better opportunities than this to equalise.

Tottenham Hotspur then sealed the 3 points in the 82nd minute when Son Heung-min put through Harry Kane who broke the offside trap and ran through to put the ball past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and put the game out of the Hammers reach to score his first goal since a return from injury as Spurs picked up their first win in 5 Premier League matches and give Spurs a much needed win.

Man of the match:

Son Heung-min – In a game of few stand out players it was the South Korean winger who came up with the goods for Tottenham putting in a typical hardworking display and grabbing himself a late assist for Harry Kane’s goal to cap off his performance.

Fascinating facts:

This is the first time Tottenham Hotspur have done the League double over West Ham since the 2012/2013 season.

West Ham have not picked up a single away point in 2020.

Harry Kane has now scored 6 goals in 5 Premier League home matches against West Ham.

This was only Tottenham Hotspur’s 5th Premier League clean sheet all season which is the joint second lowest in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho and David Moyes facing off against each other meant that this was the first time two former Manchester United managers have faced each other in the Premier League era.

This was the first time Tottenham Hotspur have kept a home clean sheet against West Ham United since March 2011.

Talking points:

Big win for Spurs to end their drought – Tottenham Hotspur had not won in 7 matches before this game a run which stretches back to a 2-3 away at Villa Park, could this win be a momentum builder for Spurs to push for a Champions League place?

West Ham continue to flirt with relegation after another defeat – West Ham have now lost two out of two since the Premier League resumed and still the Hammers only remain outside the relegation zone on goal difference, will West Ham be relegated for the first time in 9 years? Right now that has a good chance of being the case.

A very unfortunate own goal sends Tottenham on their way to victory – West Ham were defending relatively well in the game for the first 64 minutes until a very unfortunate own goal by on loan Czech Republic international Tomas Soucek as the ball went in off his heel and past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, when you are near the bottom you do unfortunately have goals like that go in against you.

Harry Kane back amongst the goals after a quiet game against Manchester United – Harry Kane put in an anonymous performance against Manchester United last Friday put that behind him in the London derby against West Ham by bagging his first goal since football returned and his 11th goal of the Premier League campaign.

VAR makes a big call after disallowing Son Heung-min’s goal in the first half – Tottenham thought they had taken the lead just before half time when South Korean winger Son Heung-min fired past West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, however, VAR had judged Son to be in an offside position by literally a toe and ruled the goal out with this being perhaps the harshest VAR decision since the return of the Premier League.

Manchester City vs Burnley22nd June 2020

Manchester City 5-0 Burnley – Manchester City  youngster Phil Foden steals the show in a fantastic display as City ease to victory against mid table side Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.

First half:

The game started as many would have expected with the visitors Burnley sitting deep and trying to soak up the pressure from Manchester City and the visitors were successful until the 22nd minute when Bernardo Silva found Phil Foden who unleashed a wonderful low shot from outside the box which beat goalkeeper Nick Pope and put City a goal up.

Manchester City took over the game from this moment on and were hardly giving visitors Burnley a touch of the ball as Manchester City dominance was rewarded with a second goal in the 43rd minute when Fernandinho played a fine ball out to winger Riyad Mahrez who took on Burnley left back Charlie Taylor and finished very well with his right foot to give Man City a 2-0 lead.

After the second goal went in it seemed to be a question of how many Manchester City would score on the day and just before half time they were awarded a penalty thanks to VAR when Ben Mee’s challenge on Sergio Aguero was checked by VAR and then awarded as a penalty kick. Riyad Mahrez stepped up with a chance to make it 3-0 before half time and despite Nick Pope going the right way, Mahrez converted and Manchester City lead 3-0 before the break, however in the only bit of bad news for Manchester City to take from this game main striker Sergio Aguero was subbed off with an injury for Gabriel Jesus just before the break.

Second half:

Just 6 minutes in to the second half and Manchester City went on to score yet another goal when a wonderful disguised pass by Phil Foden found Bernardo Silva who then crossed for David Silva who scored from inside the six yard box to put Manchester City 4-0 up with a wonderfully worked goal in what was turning out to be a fine Manchester City display.

Manchester City were not finished there as star of the show Phil Foden scored his first ever Premier League brace when Gabriel Jesus miss hit a shot which fortunately fell right in to the path of the Manchester City youngster who put the ball in at the near post to make it a convincing 5-0 to a rampant Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City just comfortably saw the game out from this moment on in what was a very good performance from City and particularly young Phil Foden; could he be a potential replacement for David Silva when he leaves at the end of the season?

Man of the match:

Phil Foden – One of the easiest choices of the season for a man of the match award with the 20 year old Manchester City youngster running the show at the Etihad as well as doubling his Premier League goals tally in just a single match. Is it time for Foden to start playing regularly and realising his full potential in a Manchester City shirt?

Fascinating facts:

Manchester City have now defeated Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium for the third consecutive time in all competitions.

This was the first time Phil Foden has scored against a team in the Premier League outside of North London with his only other two goals coming against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

This was the first time that Sergio Aguero has failed to score in a home match that he has appeared in against Burnley in all competitions scoring in his previous 5 appearances against them at the Etihad Stadium.

This was David Silva’s first Premier League goal of 2020.

Burnley have now conceded 20 goals in just 6 Premier League visits to the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City have now kept 3 consecutive Premier League clean sheets at the Etihad Stadium which is their best run this season.

This was Burnley’s first Premier League defeat in seven matches since losing to Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on January 11th.

Talking points:

Phil Foden shows why he could replace David Silva – Phil Foden put in a mouth-watering display against Burnley bagging two goals and this performance shows people just how talented the 20 year old really is and why he can potentially replace Manchester City legend David Silva at the end of the season.

Manchester City make easy work of Burnley at the Etihad again – Manchester City simply love it when they host Burnley, since Pep Guardiola took charge of Manchester City they have played Burnley 6 times at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions winning by an aggregate score of 24-2.

Sean Dyche missing both main strikers didn’t help Burnley as the Clarets make a miserable return to Premier League football after lockdown – Burnley arrived at the Etihad Stadium without main strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes both injured and this was only the second time that both of the main strikers haven’t appeared in a Premier League game all season and Burnley never looked like posing a threat to Manchester City in their absence as Burnley have a shocking restart post lockdown.

Manchester City makes sure Liverpool cannot win the League on Wednesday night against Crystal Palace – If Manchester City slipped up at all against Burnley then Liverpool would have had the chance to win the title with a victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield Wednesday night however, with Manchester City’s convincing win this can now not happen and if results go as planned then Liverpool might well have a chance to win the Premier League title on the 2nd of July at the Etihad Stadium.

Everton vs LiverpoolJune 21st 2020

Everton 0-0 Liverpool – Both Merseyside clubs played out a dull goalless draw at Goodison Park for the third consecutive season as Liverpool now need 5 points to become Premier League champions.

First half:

The first opportunity of the game fell to the hosts Everton when Brazilian winger Richarlison capitalized on a miss placed Fabinho header, however, the Brazilian shot was flashed across the face of goal with no Everton player managing to get on the end of it.

The visitors’ first opportunity fell to striker Roberto Firmino who was there to pick up Sadio Mane’s lay off only to scuff his left footed shot wide of the post as Liverpool started to build some momentum going forward.

The first half ended up being largely uneventful affair with both sides reluctant to take risks and the game being played at a very slow pace with the score remaining at 0-0 without much goal mouth action to report on for both sides.

Second half:

The second half also never really got going in the opening few minutes with the game still being very cagey, however, it was Liverpool who had the first chance which fell to midfielder Naby Keita who tried to execute a difficult volley inside the box only to fire wide of the far post.

The best chance of the game by far fell to Everton coming in the final 10 minutes when Richarlison’s low cross was neatly flicked goal wards by Dominic Calvert-Lewin whose shot was parried by Alisson with Tom Davies then hitting the post on the rebound in an opportunity the Everton midfielder looked like he had to score from close range.

The final 10 minutes of the game and surprisingly it was Everton who were creating the better chances and from the following corner it was Dominic Calvert-Lewin who got on the end of a flick on but the Everton top scorer could only head wide of the post in another big chance missed against the Toffee’s.

The last of the Everton chances fell to Richarlison himself when the Brazilian winger got the better of substitute defender Dejan Lovren however, the Brazilian chose to go it alone and shot right at goalkeeper Alisson as Liverpool scrambled the ball clear.

Liverpool did try their best to push for a late winner but it just was not the Reds day with the closest they came was through a Fabinho free kick which was tipped over by Jordan Pickford to make sure the Merseyside Derby ended all square at Goodison Park for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Man of the match:

Seamus Coleman – The experienced Everton full back put in a performance full of spirit and commitment in a fine display dealing with threats from Sadio Mane in particular all game.

Fascinating facts:

Everton have now failed to beat Liverpool in 19 Premier League meetings a run that stretches back to October 2010.

Roberto Firmino has now failed to score in 9 Premier League meetings against Everton.

This was Everton’s first Premier League clean sheet in 8 matches.

Two of Liverpool’s last three Premier League draws have now come at Goodison Park.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has never conceded a Premier League goal against Everton in his three Merseyside derbies.

This was Liverpool’s first 0-0 draw in the Premier League since last year’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The last three Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park have only produced a total of 16 shots on target.

Talking points:

Liverpool miss Salah and Robertson – Liverpool did have the option of bringing Mohammed Salah on off the bench however Jürgen Klopp didn’t think it was worth the risk with Salah still working his way back to full fitness while Liverpool also desperately missed the crossing and the left hand side threat of left back Andy Robertson all game also as the Reds created very little on a frustrating day.

Everton will be kicking themselves at a missed opportunity to win a Merseyside derby – Well Liverpool may have had most of the possession all game it was the Toffee’s who had the better chances especially towards the end of the game and these were chances that Everton did not take and will be kicking themselves at a missed chance to win their first Merseyside derby in nearly 10 years.

Carlo Ancelotti denies Liverpool another win – Carlo Ancelotti has now faced Liverpool three times this season, twice with Napoli and once with Everton winning one and drawing two of the matches, for this season you could say Jürgen Klopp’s bogey manager.

Liverpool now could win the title away at Manchester City –Now Liverpool have failed to beat Everton at Goodison Park if results go as planned then Liverpool could potentially win the Premier League away at Manchester City on Thursday 2ndof July in what would be a huge moment to end the clubs 30 year wait for the Premier League.

Another dull derby at Goodison Park – The last six Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park have only produced a poor total of three goals, so if you want entertainment I think you might well be best off avoiding this fixture which once again produced an uneventful 0-0 draw between the two Merseyside rivals.

Watford vs Leicester CityJune 20th 2020

Watford 1-1 Leicester City – Two fantastic late goals from Ben Chillwell and Craig Dawson meant it was a point a piece at Vicarage Road as a big game at both ends of the table ends all square.

First half:

The game started rather cagily from both teams who seemed to be feeling their way back in to Premier League football with the first big chance of the game falling to the hosts when Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi was caught in possession by Watford skipper Troy Deeney who poked the ball through to Abdoulaye Doucoure who saw his weak shot comfortably saved by Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to keep the game goalless.

The first half overall was a game that chances came few and far between and both sides would have been rather satisfied with the game being goalless in a big game for both sides.

Second half:

Hosts Watford began the second half by far the brighter out of the two teams with the first big opportunity coming for Ismaila Sarr who was put through by Etienne Capoue, however, the Senegalese wingers shot was saved by Kasper Schmeichel who proved to be the Foxes hero once again.

Watford continued to apply the pressure when Troy Deeney’s header went just wide of the post with Watford pushing for a vital win to move them away from relegation danger.

Leicester City started to take over from this point on for the remainder of the game with the Foxes first big opportunity coming through defender Caglar Soyuncu got his header of a free set piece put unfortunately headed it wide of the post.

Leicester City then continued to apply the pressure on the Watford goal when Marc Albrighton’s thunderous effort hit the post which then lead to a James Maddison low shot that was very well saved by Ben Foster to keep the game goalless for the time being with the Foxes getting closer to an opener.

The Foxes finally made the breakthrough in the 90th minute when substitute Demarai Gray picked out Ben Chilwell who struck an absolute beauty which went in off the post, a goal so good that goalkeeper Ben Foster could only stand and watch the ball fly past him for what surely looked like a Leicester City winner.

Watford knew that they only had one last chance to get anything from this game and fortunately for the Hornets it was a chance that was taken from an unlikely source in Craig Dawson who scored his first Premier League goal for the club with a fantastic overhead kick which Kasper Schmeichel couldn’t keep out as the Hornets grabbed a crucial point in the relegation battle.

Full time

Man of the match:

Craig Dawson – Not only did the Watford defender register his first goal for the Hornets; the 30 year old also had a very solid game defensively by admirably coping with the threat of Jamie Vardy all game and making some vital last ditch interceptions.

Fascinating facts:

This was Craig Dawson’s first Premier League goal since February 2018 when he scored for West Brom against Huddersfield Town.

This is Ben Chilwell is enjoying his highest ever goal scoring season with the left back bagging 3 goals this campaign.

Leicester City haven’t won an away Premier League game since New Year’s Day when they won at Newcastle United 0-3.

Leicester City now haven’t won at Vicarage Road since March 2016, losing 3 and drawing 1.

Watford have never kept a Premier League clean sheet against Leicester City in 12 attempts.

Talking points:

Intriguing battle between Sarr and Chilwell – There were some interesting battles all over the pitch between the two sides but none more interesting than Senegalese winger Ismaila Sarr and England left back Ben Chilwell who certainly had a good contest against one another.

Watford will be the more disappointed of the two sides on the day – Despite a last gasp equaliser from the Hornets it was the side near the relegation zone who created the better chances on the day especially for the first hour which might well leave the Hornets frustrated they did not take all 3 points.

Demarai Gray the game changer – Leicester City’s Demarai Gray can certainly be a frustrating player at times with only 12 goals in 160 games in his Foxes career but there was no doubt the 23 year old changed the game when he came on for Leicester City and the Foxes looked more dangerous with him on the field.

Jamie Vardy dip in form since Christmas a concern –Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy started the season fantastically scoring 18 goals before Christmas, however, the English striker has only managed 2 goals in 9 Premier League appearances since, both of which came in the same match at home to Aston Villa, what has happened to the strikers form?

Two fantastic goals to end the game as Defenders steal the show – With the game having no goals until the 90th minute it was fair to say the goals that eventually came were well worth the wait with Ben Chilwell’s being a fantastic strike and a Craig Dawson’s overhead kick giving the fans who watched the game at home a late treat.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester UnitedJune 19th 2020

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Manchester United – Steven Bergwijn’s first half goal was cancelled out by a Bruno Fernandes penalty as Tottenham remain 4 points behind the Red Devils in the race for Champions League football.

First half:

The game started off cagey as both sides were easing their way back in to the action and it was Manchester United who had the first big chance of the game through Marcus Rashford who saw his low shot well saved by the legs of Hugo Lloris.

The opening goal of the game was scored by Steven Bergwijn for Tottenham who went on a good run through the Manchester United defence and then scored his third goal for Spurs since signing in January; however, David De Gea should no doubt have done much better.

Tottenham had a great chance to double their lead a few minutes later when Bergwin’s cross found the head of Son Heung-Min who forced a good save out of David De Gea who slightly redeemed himself for his earlier error.

Tottenham saw the first half out comfortably in the end as The Red Devils struggled to create any meaningful chances.

Second half:

The first big moment of the second half was when Hugo Lloris was forced in to another great save by Anthony Martial this time who saw his shot well tipped over by his national team mate to keep Spurs in front.

Manchester United did then win a penalty with 10 minutes to go when Eric Dier bought down substitute Paul Pogba in a clumsy challenge from the Englishmen. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted his third Premier League goal for Manchester United.

Manchester United were well and truly on top in the secondhalf and were awarded a second penalty when Bruno Fernandes was clipped by Eric Dier inside the box, however VAR looked at the decision and over turned the call as there was not enough contact as VAR saved Tottenham from conceding a second penalty as the game finished all square.

Full time

Man of the match:

Steven Bergwijn – The Tottenham winger looked threatening all game causing Manchester United problems throughout and a scorer of a fine goal to top off his performance.

Fascinating facts:

This was the first time Spurs and Manchester United have drawn a game since December 2014 which was 0-0 at White Hart Lane.

All of Steven Bergwijn’s goals for Tottenham have come in home fixtures.

Manchester United have been awarded 23 Premier League penalties since the start of last season which is 9 more than any other side.

This is the first time Manchester United have avoided a loss from off Spurs in a Premier League season since 2014/2015.

Manchester United are now 6 Premier League games unbeaten which is their joint best unbeaten run this season.

Talking points:

A quiet day for both clubs top scorers – Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Martial were all largely ineffective throughout in a rare quiet day for the four top scorers on the field this season.

A glimpse of Pogba and Fernandes connection – The duo that Manchester United fans have been excited to see and by the looks of it, the two certainly showed glimpses of what we could see in the future of the Manchester United midfield.

VAR spot on to overturn Manchester United’s second penalty – It’s fair to say VAR has come in for some criticism this season and at times the criticism has been justified however today VAR correctly overturned a penalty what was not and mainly did and that is what VAR was bought in to do.

Champions League rivals happier with the result than these two clubs – If Tottenham Hotspur won this game they would have gone only a point behind the Red Devils but as it turns out the teams happiest with this result will be Chelsea, Wolves, and Sheffield United who are the teams still in the race for a Champions League spot.

Both January signings on score sheet – Steven Bergwijn and Bruno Fernandes have both made impressive impacts at their respective clubs with the two men becoming key players in their short times in the Premier League and this game was no different with both men being the driving force for both teams.

Is David De Gea under threat of no longer being Manchester United number one? It was only last season when David De Gea pulled off a fantastic performance at Wembley for Manchester United against Spurs, however can you recall a fantastic performance from the Manchester United goalkeeper since then? It seems as though the once Manchester United hero between the sticks place might be under threat especially if the form of on loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson is anything to go by at Sheffield United.

Norwich City vs Southampton19th June 2020

Norwich City 0-3 Southampton – Southampton’s rampant three goal second half all but secures the Saints will still play Premier League football next season as Norwich City look destined for a return to the Championship after a dismal display at Carrow Road.

First half:

The Canaries looked to be up for the occasion despite the lack of crowd in the opening 10 minutes without creating any major chances throughout the first half; however, it was Southampton who come the closest early on when Danny Ings saw his header well saved by Tim Krul.

The Saints took over once they grew in to the game and started to look very threatening once they hit their stride, Scott Armstrong forced a comfortable save out of Tim Krul after a well worked corner and then after a powerful breakout from defence by Jack Stephens his pass to Danny Ings saw the Saints striker hit the crossbar when the Saints striker might well have felt he could have done better.

Second half:

After a rather quiet first half in terms of entertainment and quality, the second half begun with a bang as Southampton star man Danny Ings finish magnificently in to the far corner to give the Saints the all-important breakthrough with his 16thgoal of the Premier League season.

The Saints looked in the mood for more from this moment on and that is exactly what happened when Stuart Armstrong finished with his left foot from outside the box to put the Saints 0-2 to the good and surely out of the Canaries reach.

Norwich City could not afford an off day today with this being one of their most winnable games remaining this campaign but that was exactly what the Canaries were doing with main man Teemu Pukki quiet throughout on a frustrating day summed up when his weak shot inside the box was blocked by Jan Bednarek.

Southampton capped off a fine away performance by making it 3 goals and 3 points when former Norwich City player Nathan Redmond finished wonderfully with his left foot to secure a 0-3 win for the Saints.

Full time

Man of the match:

Danny Ings – The England striker has had a fantastic season and this performance was no different with the English striker putting in a brilliant display in terms of effort and commitment as well as bagging a goal and an assist to his name.

Fascinating facts:

Danny Ings becomes the first Southampton player to score 16 goals in a Premier League season since the 2014/2015 season with still 8 games to play.

Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki remain the only players to have scored more than one goal for Norwich City in the Premier League this season.

Southampton have taken more points on the road (23) then at St Mary’s (14) this season.

Norwich City have now failed to score in 6 out of 10 Premier League games in 2020.

This was Southampton’s first win away to Norwich City in the Premier League since April 1994.

Talking points:

Danny Ings knocking on the door for an England call-up – Danny Ings has scored 16 goals this season in a fantastic campaign so far, Ings may have plenty of competition but he is surely close to a call-up for the three lions.

Norwich City surely relegated now – With Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City all to play away from home it will take a miracle for them to remain in the Premier League next season.

Nathan Redmond comes back to haunt his former club – Nathan Redmond spent three seasons at Norwich City and today the English winger showed his former side what they are missing by scoring the third goal of the game.

Ralph Hasenhuttl deserves credit for the job he has done this season – The Austrian looked on the brink of being sacked after the embarrassing 0-9 defeat at St Mary’s to Leicester City earlier on this season as the Saints sat in the relegation zone the but the Austrian has turned things round massively and now it looks like Southampton will still be a Premier League side next season.

Manchester City vs ArsenalJune 17th 2020

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal – Goals from Raheem Sterling, a penalty from Kevin De Bruyne, and a late goal from Phil Foden gave Manchester City an easy win over 10 menArsenal after David Luiz has a nightmare coming off the bench for the Gunners whilst Mikel Arteta suffered a disappointing return to the Etihad Stadium.

First half:

Both sets of players and the officials followed on from the Aston Villa vs Sheffield United match by taking a knee just after the first whistle blew in a powerful message towards racism.

It was the hosts Manchester City who had the first dangerous attempt of the game in the opening couple of minutes when Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne saw his free kick tipped over the crossbar by Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

Arsenal had to make two changes in the opening 20 minutes of the game when midfielder Granit Xhaka and defender Pablo Mari both being forced off with injuries which through a spanner in Mikel Arteta’s game plan on his return to the Etihad.

Bernd Leno continued to be the Gunners hero in the first half pulling off fine saves from Raheem Sterling, David Silva, and Riyad Marhez to keep the score at 0-0.

Manchester City finally got the breakthrough just before half time when substitute David Luiz’s error allowed Raheem Sterling to volley home his first goal of 2020 and the first goal since the return of the Premier League.

Second half:

Not even 5 minutes in to the second half and Manchester City were awarded a penalty when David Luiz bought down Riyad Marhez inside the box and to add insult to injury for the Gunners the Brazilian was sent off for being last man reducing Arsenal to ten men.

Kevin De Bruyne stepped up from the spot and sent Bernd Leno the wrong way to put the hosts 2-0 up and give them daylight between them and the Gunners as De Bruyne scored his third goal against Arsenal this season.

There was an unfortunate incident towards the end of the game when Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson clattered in to his own defender which happened to be surprise selection 19 year old Eric Garcia who had to be stretchered off with oxygen.

Manchester City cruised to victory from here on in and added a third goal at the end after substitute Sergio Aguero saw his shot saved on to the post from Bernd Leno which was then followed up by 20 year old Phil Foden who scored his first Premier League goal in over a year to cap off a fine evening for Manchester City.

Full time

Man of the match:

Raheem Sterling – The winger looked lively all game and determined all day to break his 2020 goal duck and that is exactly what he did at the end of the first half a goal which merited his performance.

Fascinating facts:

Manchester City have now done a league double over Arsenal for three consecutive seasons with an overall 17-2 aggregate score line.

Raheem Sterling has now scored six career goals against Arsenal which have all came in victories.

Both of Phil Foden’s Premier League career goals have come against North London clubs in Tottenham and Arsenal and both in home wins.

David Luiz red card means that this is the third time that an Arsenal player has been sent off in five away Premier League games under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have now had a player sent off in four different Premier League games this season which is more than any other Premier League club.

Arsenal now haven’t won away at any of the other traditional top 6 sides in 26 attempts with their last victory being 0-2 away at Manchester City back in January 2015.

Talking points:

Bernd Leno great performance despite conceding 3 goals – Bernd Leno has been an underrated goalkeeper for a while now between the sticks for Arsenal and this performance shows why, a great showing in goal denying Manchester City on many occasions, the German deserves a better defence.

Raheem Sterling finally breaks his goal drought – Raheem Sterling had not scored a Premier League goal since December when he scored two in a 3-2 defeat to Wolves, in fact he hadn’t scored at the Etihad since October in a 3-0 win against Villa but successfully broke his goal drought against the Gunners.

Man City make sure Liverpool can’t win the League away at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday – If Manchester City had lost to Arsenal then that would have meant Liverpool could have won the derby away at local rivals Everton Sunday evening but that now cannot happen and Liverpool will have to beat Everton and Crystal Palace to have the title wrapped up next week.

David Luiz horror show means he might have played his last game for Arsenal – David Luiz who was subbed on for the injured Pablo Mari in the 20th minute was at fault for the first goal and then gave away a penalty and was sent off for the second and with his contract running out soon there is a good chance the Brazilian has played his last match for the Gunners.

Will Phil Foden be given more game time? We have known about Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden’s talent for a while now but the lack of game time always seems to hinder the 20 year olds potential but with the Premier League title nearly out of Manchester City’s reach is it time for Foden to play more games and possibly replace David Silva in the coming seasons?

Arsenal just cannot beat a rival top 6 side away – January 18th2015 was the last time Arsenal won away at a top 6 rival which was Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, 26 attempts which includes 10 draw, 16 defeats, 28 scored, 59 conceded, and only one clean sheet. Will this forgettable Arsenal record ever end?

Arsenal have a mountain to climb to reach Champions League football next season now – Arsenal currently sit 8 points behind 4th place Chelsea with only 9 games to play and unless the Gunners win pretty much every game it looks impossible to see Arsenal returning to the Champions League for the first time in four seasons.

Aston Villa vs Sheffield UnitedJune 17th 2020

Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield United – Aston Villa remain in the relegation zone after a goalless draw with Champions League chasing Sheffield United after the Blades had a bizarre first half goal ruled out with goal line technology not working as football returned for the first time in 100 days.

First half:

As soon as the whistle blew to begin the match, every single player and official took the knee in respect of the Black Life Matters campaign in a powerful moment as football players united against racism.

The hosts had the better of the early minutes of the game with the first and best opportunity falling to Conor Hourihane as the Irish international saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Dean Henderson to keep the scores at 0-0 early on.

Despite Aston Villa having the better of the majority of the first half, the visitors should have been in front in the 42ndminute after Oliver Norwood’s free kick looked to be certainly carried over the line by Villa keeper Orjan Nyland however the referee had no signal from his watch to give the goal as Sheffield United players were furious and had every right to be.

Second half:

Aston Villa continued to be on top in the second half and they came close to taking the lead when Anwar El Ghazi’s low cross was very nearly tapped home by striker Keinan Davies who just couldn’t stretch enough to tap the ball in to the net.

John McGinn who was making his first Premier League appearance since December forced goalkeeper Dean Henderson in to another fine save when his left footed shot from just outside the box was well saved by the Sheffield United goalkeeper who was enjoying another fine day between the sticks for the Blades.

Full time.

Man of the match:

Dean Henderson – The on loan Manchester United goalkeeper is enjoying a fantastic season for Sheffield United and this performance was no different with Henderson making some very good saves to earn Sheffield United a point and grabbing another clean sheet.

Fascinating facts:

This was only Aston Villa’s second 0-0 draw of the season at Villa Park with the other being in September against West Ham United.

This is the first time Villa have failed to score at home in the Premier League in 11 matches a run which stretches back to September.

Sheffield United have only lost two away games all season which have come against the top two Premier League sides Liverpool and Manchester City.

Sheffield United have now kept 11 clean sheets this season which is the joint second most in the Premier League.

This was the first time Sheffield United have ever taken a point at Villa Park in the Premier League era after losing on their last three previous visits in the top flight.

Talking points:

Both sides disappointed with draw – A draw here doesn’t really suit either side as Sheffield United could do with the points to break in to a Champions League place and Aston Villa could certainly do with them to avoid relegation.

Keinan Davies looked lively – With Brazilian striker Wesley still injured and January signing Mbwana Samatta not looking clinical, this lively performance from Keinan Davies seemed good news for Villa as the striker was lively all game being a handful for the Sheffield United defence.

Dean Henderson excellent again – Dean Henderson would be a great shout for goalkeeper of the season this year and he once again proved why with a fine display for the Blades making many good saves, will Henderson soon be England’s number one keeper?

Goal line technology faulty for the first time – Goal line technology has been pretty much flawless since it was introduced back in the 2013/2014 Premier League season but today that was certainly not the case with Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland blatantly carrying the ball over the line and the goal bafflingly was not given. What if this decision costs the Blades Champions League football?

No use of VAR – VAR has been a talking point in many games this season but in this particular game it was barely used if at all, could VAR have overturned the goal line decision and awarded Sheffield United the goal?

Will no fans be a problem for clubs? Of course as we are all aware football fans are not allowed back in stadiums for the time being due to the Coronavirus pandemic, how much of an effect on teams will this have near the bottom of the table that rely on atmospheres? By the looks of today, the effect could be a fair bit of an effect.

Werder Bremen vs Wolfsburg7th June 2020

Werder Bremen 0-1 Wolfsburg – Werder Bremen’s 39 year stay in the Bundesliga is looking increasingly in jeopardy as Wolfsburg make it three away wins in a row to move up to 6thin the Bundesliga.

First half:

Despite hosts Werder Bremen starting the better of the two sides it was Wolfsburg who had the first big opportunity in the 13th minute which came through Wout Weghorst after taking the ball past Veljkovic the strikers weak shot was then saved by Pavlenka in the Bremen goal which allowed the covering Veljkovic to make an easy goal line clearance.

Overall this was a forgettable first half with neither side taking advantage and grasping any opportunities, the game deserved to be 0-0 going in to the break.

Second half:

The second half was a largely tense affair with most of the game lacking in chances and quality in truth, this was far from a classic but was certainly played in a very competitive manner.

Wolfsburg biggest threat of the second half seemed to be right back Kevin Mbabu who was menacing forward at every opportunity causing Bremen trouble.

In a match that looked destined to finish 0-0 the deadlock was finally broken, however it was broken by the visitors Werder Bremen when Wout Weghorst scored his first goal in six Bundesliga matches to put Werder Bremen on the brink of three away wins in a row.

Overall it must be said that Wolfsburg did more than enough to win this match despite their performance being nothing special, as for Werder Bremen it is looking increasingly likely now that Werder Bremen will be relegated as they now sit six points adrift of safety with only four games remaining, they lost a must win game here.

Match rating:

3.5/10

Man of the match:

Kevin Mbabu – The right back looked threatening all day and caused Werder Bremen so many issues on that side, a constant joy to watch is the Swiss 25 year old.

Fascinating facts:

This was Wolfsburg’s first win away at Bremen since 2015

Werder Bremen failed to score against Wolfsburg in a home match for the first time since 2013

Werder Bremen have now gone 13 home matches without a win

This was Wolfsburg first away clean sheet in the Bundesliga since November away at Frankfurt
